Recipe: The Healing Qualities of Bone Broth

Updated: Apr 24, 2020

Many of you may have been hearing about the benefits of bone broth soup, as it seems to be the next big health craze, but this is no craze to take lightly! Bone broth soup is a truly healing and healthy component to most diets and I highly recommend it in my practice. The benefits of bone broth soup seem to be endless. Some of the benefits include: strengthening the immune system, healing the digestive system, reducing allergies, reducing cellulite and strengthening the body after childbirth. It is also contains minerals like calcium, magnesium and phosphorus.

So what is the difference between bone broth and stock? The difference is that bone broth is typically made from beef marrow bones (preferably grass-fed) and simmered on low anywhere from 4-72 hours. Regular stock isn't cooked as long and doesn't always include dense marrow bones. The point of cooking the stock so long is to break down the bones so you can retrieve all the healing components out of the marrow. It is super easy to make and you can make it in the crock pot! One to two cups of bone broth soup daily is an optimal choice for staying healthy this cold and flu season. I enjoy a cup in the morning.

Here is an easy recipe for bone broth soup:

3-4 lbs. of grass-fed marrow bones 1 onion 2 carrots 3 stalks of celery 2 TBSP of apple cider vinegar salt and pepper to taste fresh herbs of your choice

Place the bones on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for half an hour. Remove bones and juices and place in the crock pot. Cut the onion, carrots, herbs, and celery into smaller pieces and place in the crock pot along with salt and pepper to your tasting. Add the vinegar and cover with water until the crock pot is full. Set on a low setting for 4-72 hours, the longer the better. After desired cooking time, strain the stock into a large bowl. Let cool in the refrigerator. Transfer to smaller containers and to the freezer for long-term storage.

Enjoy!!
